HÖGSKOLAN I BORÅS

Sweden

The University of Borås (HB) is a multidisciplinary university that conducts research and education within Textile and Fashion, Business & IT, Integrated Caring Science, Library and Information Science, Resource Recovery, and teacher education. It currently has approximately 11 000 students and 730 employees. HB is the only educational institution in Sweden that has a clear and explicit profile towards textiles and fashion and carries a national responsibility through its department of Swedish School of Textiles.

The Swedish School of Textiles has an overall strategy to strengthen the three areas of design, technology and management. It is located at the heart of the globally highly successful Swedish fashion industry. The research area is mainly developed through the investment in Smart Textiles, Re:textile and Innovation Square. The strategic research idea behind Smart Textiles is to develop business-led development projects and experimental research in the areas of textile material technology, interaction design and management. Re:textile goals are similar with focus on co-development of circular business models and design methods. Close to the Re:textile project are the innovation projects, like such for digitalizing the textile value chain. Innovation Square’s aim is to develop industry-led projects with focus on circular economies for design and furniture.

The University of Boras has also free-standing courses where many are related to re-skilling that industry professionals can take whereas many other courses are also for new comers in the field. The Swedish School of Textiles is located in Textile Fashion Centre Cluster, which offers the facilities and resources together with Marketplace Borås and Incubator Borås in collaborating with local large corporations and SMEs in fashion, logistics, and retail. All these results in HB being given the responsibility to host a national platform for sustainable fashion. The Swedish School of Textiles is also a member of leading international networks in textile and fashion, e.g. AUTEX, IFFTI, EURATEX.
